Florida – Day 3

Day started well, we now officially own the house, had the locks changed, and now we have power and water, albeit cold only at the moment, so no jacuzzi just yet.

We also have no Internet here, so some days might get missed out, unless we go to a wifi enabled coffee shop every day.

Florida – Day 2

Got a good nights sleep, jetlag didn’t seem to bother me. Perhaps I’m speaking too soon.

Made waffles for breakfast, gotta love a county that doesn’t bat an eyelid when you fry batter and cover it with syrup, while describing it as anything other than a desert.

Did the final handover for the house today, went pretty well, the house is absolutely amazing. Only a bit of damp and some ants to worry about really.

It rained pretty much non stop today, we had a few hours of dry weather in the morning, and a few in the evening, but it’s been wet apart from that.

When it wasn’t raining, I managed to get a quick walk around winter park, it’s really nice. It has a nice balance of old history and modern places. There’s a wine tasting place in town that operates like a vending machine, you pay a few dollars for a taster of a $100 bottle of wine. Nice idea.

Florida – Day 1

Had the longest time I’ve ever spent in a plane getting here, we sat on the runway at heathrow for 3 and a half hours before our plane left the ground, then an 8 and a half hour flight to Miami. When we left heathrow it was sunny and warm, but when we landed it was raining! Not cool.

We drove for about 90 minutes to a mid point between miami and winter park, and found a hotel to crash out in. Not an eventful day by any means, but necessary.

SliceOfPy – New Project

Its about time I did something useful, so here it is, a web server coded in python. Hooray I hear you all shout, but hold your horses until you hear what features I plan to implement.

• mod_rewrite urls as standard
• .sopml (Slice Of Py Markup Language), for rapid web prototyping and easier development
• Fully open source and modular
• Cross Platform and Free
• SoPQL, Database emulation using encrypted flat-file databases

Who knows how many of these features I will actually accomplish, but its a great idea, I certainly havnt seen a web server like this before.

Progress so far..

Admittedly at the moment (About 3 hours into the project) I already have a python http server, that can serve static html files, and recognize the .sopml extension. It will take a while to decide what this new markup language will entail, but a sneak preview suggests it might look something like this:

head { title { This is test markup! } }

body { p:tall { This is a paragraph with a css class } }

Keep em peeled, I actually intend to give this a proper go! If I’m successful, it should make it even easier to develop simple HTML websites that are well coded (sopml is parsed to XHTML strict standards).

Back at last!

Once again, its been criminally long since I last visited here, let alone updated it, so I’ve given it a fresh look and some fresh content. As you can probably imagine, a lot has gone on since my last post, so lets start with a quick catch up.

First and foremost, I have now finished my degree, and got a first, which is pretty damn awesome. What’s more awesome is that I’m guaranteed a place at royal holloway now, and while its slowly starting to hit me, the realization isnt quite here yet

My last post was just before my macbook arrived, its here now, and its absolutely beautiful. I’m keeping it running clean and fast, and only have the bare essentials (coding tools, skype, spotify, and qt codecs). I have the full geotagging setup running after an afternoon’s tweaking. I recently discovered the iPhone 3G supports geotagging (Since 2.0 apparently!), so I’ve been snapping some shots and getting them onto iPhoto. The problem was, when I uploaded the to flickr, they didnt carry the EXIF metadata with them, but after a bit of twiddling with iPhoto’s preferences, they now go up fine, and I have 1-Click publishing. Beautiful.

I have recently started getting into web design as well, with the nearing release of my rainbow delight, http://www.jonbutler.tk. Its a lovely site, hosted on the Google App Engine platform, using mootools for the funky nav bar. I just need to fill the bugger with content then i’m done.

Well thats about it from me for now, got a banging homemade curry on the hob, the whole house smells of indian spices and herbs. Lush.

Long time no update!

Well it’s been a while since I last blogged, truth is while I have been busy, I could have found time, I’m just massively lazy when it comes to documenting my life. A fair bit has happened since my last post, so I will fill you in.

Firstly, and most importantly, I have been offered a place at royal holloway on a masters course in information security. This is pretty much the best thing to happen to me in my life thus far and I’m stoked to see how I cope. As a well done pressie I bought myself a brand new shiny MacBook pro which is winging it’s way here as we speak.

In comparison to that, everything else in my life seems pretty trivial, gettin good grades, project is going well, generally all is gravy. Got some awesome new tees on the way as well, some that actually fit me for a change! But again, pales into insignificance against holloway and the madness that will be.

That’s mostly it for now, maybe il update this a little more often now I’ve blown off the cobwebs and dusted it off.
